Here Are a Few Clients Who Have Achieved Explosive Success with their Book Retreat Campaign

Working with dozens of authors we’ve enjoyed an unparalleled track record.

Propelling 130 out of 130 books onto national best-seller lists.

[object Object]
The following three case studies are typical of most Book Retreat Clients and their results. All three were already successful and "visible" prior to engaging us. And all of them achieved explosive success thanks to their strategically planned campaign. Their best-seller success increased business, raised their profiles, elevated their status (and fees) as speakers, and allowed them to diversify their work and continue to make a difference.

CASE STUDY #1, SHORT

AUTHOR: Jordan Rubin

BOOK: The Maker’s Diet

SITUATION: In 2003-2004, company revenue was $19 million, based mostly (70%) on an average of $50 worth of purchases every time a purchase was made at Garden of Life online.

GOAL: To expand Garden of Life’s market exposure and increase the average amount clients spent on online product purchases at Garden of Life to $100.

OUR BESTSELLER CAMPAIGN:

  • Advertising: Use print and radio advertising to create the “ground” support.
  • Public Relations: Use both a traditional PR firm and a Christian PR firm.
  • Bestselling Book: Make The Maker’s Diet a New York Times bestselling book.

RESULTS:

  • Between 2004 and 2010, The Maker’s Diet sold more than 800,000 copies.
  • The complete marketing, PR, and bookseller advertising campaign helped increase Garden of Life’s gross revenue to over $70 million in one year, more than triple the original goal of doubling the average of $50 per purchase to $100 per purchase online.

CASE STUDY #2, SHORT

AUTHOR: Roy H. Williams (aka The Wizard of Ads)

BOOK: Secret Formulas of the Wizard of Ads

SITUATION: Roy H. Williams already had a successful book launch before Michael Drew, as Director of Marketing at Bard Press, took on the follow-up to Williams’s first book, The Wizard of Ads. That book sold well, and established Roy H. Williams as a name, but he wanted more.

GOAL: Roy’s agency, Williams Marketing, was the 8th largest buyer of radio advertising in North America; Roy wanted to increase that status to 6th largest buyer. Roy wanted to double his fee for keynote presentations, which had been an average of $5,000 for 50 presentations.

OUR BESTSELLER CAMPAIGN:

  • Before the book was published, Michael and Roy's staff mailed an advance copy of it to the general managers at more than 10,000 radio stations in North America.
  • The proposal asked that the general managers at these radio stations buy 20 books (at retail price) and run 200 radio ads promoting the book.
  • As a bonus, Williams would give them a 12-course Video Training series that the radio station managers could use to train their sales teams.
  • Once the sales reps had completed their training, they would utilize their newly acquired skills and leave behind with a potential client on a sales call one copy of Secret formulas of the Wizard of Ads (out of the 20 that station had purchased).
  • More than 850 radio stations participated in the promotion.

RESULTS:

  • Secret Formulas of the Wizard of Ads sold more than 17,000 books in its first week of publication, promoted with more than 170,000 radio ads.
  • Secret formulas of the Wizard of Ads hit #1 on the Wall Street Journal Business Bestsellers List and #3 on the New York Times Business Bestsellers List.
  • Within a year, Williams Marketing became the 4th largest buyer of radio advertising (previously, 8th largest),
  • Roy’s speaking fees jumped to $20,000 per keynote (previously, $5,000), giving 67 keynote speeches in 1999-2000, earning more than $1 million.
  • To date, Secret Formulas of the Wizard of Ads has sold more than 250,000 copies.

Subsequently, Williams launched Wizard Academy, a highly touted nonprofit Business and Communication school, with student housing, in the west-suburban community just outside

CASE STUDY #3, SHORT

AUTHOR: Ivan Misner

BOOK: Masters of Networking

SITUATION: Misner wanted to incentivize BNI’s 30,000 members and franchises worldwide to increase the organization’s numbers.

GOAL: Create a book for which franchise owners throughout North America would each write a chapter (making each of them an author), each being set up as a franchise owner and an expert in business networking in their local markets, and each sign the book at different signing events across America.

OUR BESTSELLER CAMPAIGN:

  • Each franchise owner/contributor set up a one-week, local author tour culminating in a one-day event, that would be held in 56 different cities across North America all on the same day and at the same time. The event was called Masters Day.
  • In the week leading up to Master’s Day, each franchisee—under Michael Drew’s direction—set up local media promoting the day and a special book-signing event that day at a local bookstore.
  • BNI members in each local market were to bring guests with them to the local book signing as part of a membership drive.

RESULTS:

  • The book sold more than 15,000 books on Masters Day, launching the book onto the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Business Bestseller lists.
  • Masters Day broke a Guiness Book world record for the most book signings in one day in different cities (56 cities with book signings).
  • BNI more than doubled in size to more than 75,000 members (previously 30,000) within the year after Masters Day (Ivan credits this growth to Michael Drew’s successful promotion of Masters of Networking and Masters Day).
  • Masters Day won Ivan and Michael the highly coveted book marketing award, The Benjamin Franklin Award for Innovation and Excellence in Marketing: for Campaigns that Cost under $10,000.

CASE STUDY #4, SHORT

AUTHOR: Garrett Gunderson & Stephen Palmer

BOOK: Killing Sacred Cows

SITUATION: Initially released in January 2007, "Killing Sacred Cows" struggled to reach a broad audience despite its valuable financial insights. The book lacked a clear "Big Idea," engaging storytelling, and an inspiring message.

STRATEGIC INTERVENTION: In May 2007, Michael Drew, founder of Book Retreat, was enlisted to revamp the book’s marketing strategy. Drew identified the need to embed the "4 Pillars of Effective Communication" to transform the book.

IMPLEMENTATION:

  • Big Idea: Refined the book's concept to present a groundbreaking perspective.
  • Story: Added relatable storytelling to illustrate the Big Idea.
  • Nuts & Bolts: Enhanced actionable advice for financial empowerment.
  • Hope: Interwove optimism to motivate readers.

RESULTS: The re-launch was a triumph, with the book soaring onto bestseller lists of the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the New York Times. Gunderson's career was revolutionized, branding him as a thought leader and marking the rebrand as the most significant business-building event of his career.

CONCLUSION: The success of "Killing Sacred Cows" underscores the importance of strategic messaging. Michael Drew’s application of the 4 pillars elevated the book, securing its legacy as a transformative work in personal finance.

What People Are Saying

Amy Joy

I just finished my book primarily because I chose to attend this retreat and work with Michael Drew and his team. I don't know if I would have ever actually started and finished without help without accountability, without direction. Writing a book is not for the faint of heart. And so to have that support was amazing.

Neil Cannon

I am embarrassed to admit that I had been working on my book for a couple of years when I attended the retreat I ended up starting my book from scratch using Michael’s process. I wrote it far quicker than I dreamed I could. It just flowed much better. It was also good to be around other aspiring authors. Writing isn't always the easiest. And if you're surrounded by people doing the same thing, sharing the same journey, it just makes it so much better.
